You'll find mentions of the phrase "head them off at the pass" as early as 1913 in Webster's, and probably much earlier, in dime novels, but I haven't conducted any research on this; I'll leave it to Beaver. Also, I haven't read enough Westerns--I'll have to get back to them.

Anyway, if anyone would like to start up a cattle ranch in their living room, here's a picture of a chocolate cow, which would get things going. This cow comes from Yorkshire, so it probably gives puddings instead of milk, but if you're made out of chocolate, you can do whatever you like.
